परंपरा के अनुसार कार्तिक पूर्णिमा पर भगवान शिव ने त्रिपुरासुर का अंत किया था, इसलिए इसे त्रिपुरारी पूर्णिमा भी कहते हैं। मान्यता है कि इस विजय की ख़ुशी में देवता काशी आकर गंगा में स्नान करते हैं और दीप जलाते हैं। इसी से इसका नाम "देवों की दीपावली" पड़ा।Tradition holds that on Kartik Purnima Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura, which is why the day is also called Tripurari Purnima. It is believed that, to celebrate, the gods come to Kashi, bathe in the Ganga and light lamps. Hence the name: the "Diwali of the gods".

कार्तिक मास का समापन भी इसी दिन होता है। बहुत से लोग सुबह गंगा या किसी पवित्र नदी में कार्तिक स्नान करते हैं और शाम को दीपदान करते हैं।The day also closes the month of Kartik. Many people take a morning Kartik snan in the Ganga or another sacred river and offer lamps (deep daan) in the evening.

शाम होते ही रविदास घाट से राजघाट तक गंगा किनारे के घाटों की सीढ़ियाँ दीयों से भर जाती हैं। दशाश्वमेध घाट की गंगा आरती इस दिन ख़ास भव्य होती है, और बहुत से लोग नाव से घाटों की रोशनी देखते हैं। पंचगंगा घाट का हज़ारा दीपस्तंभ भी इस शाम जलाया जाता है।As evening falls, the steps of the Ganga ghats from Ravidas Ghat to Raj Ghat fill with diyas. The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is especially grand on this day, and many people watch the lit ghats from a boat. The Hazara Deepstambh (thousand-lamp pillar) at Panchganga Ghat is also lit that evening.

घर पर हों तो भी आप तुलसी, घर के दरवाज़े या किसी नदी-तालाब के किनारे दीप जलाकर यह पर्व मना सकते हैं।If you are at home, you can still mark the day by lighting lamps by the tulsi, at your door or beside a river or pond.

घाट पर जाने से पहलेBefore you visit the ghats

• भीड़ बहुत होती है; जल्दी पहुँचें और परिवार के साथ मिलने की जगह पहले से तय करें।Crowds are very large; arrive early and agree a meeting point with your family.
• नाव केवल पंजीकृत नाविक से लें और लाइफ़ जैकेट पहनें; क्षमता से ज़्यादा लोगों वाली नाव में न बैठें।Take a boat only with a registered boatman, wear a life jacket and avoid overloaded boats.
• बच्चों और बुज़ुर्गों का हाथ पकड़े रखें; घाट की सीढ़ियाँ फिसलन भरी हो सकती हैं।Keep hold of children and elders; ghat steps can be slippery.
• दीये जलाते समय कपड़ों और दुपट्टे को लौ से दूर रखें।Keep clothes and dupattas away from the flame when lighting diyas.
• गंगा में प्लास्टिक न डालें; मिट्टी के दीये और फूल चुनें।Do not put plastic in the Ganga; choose clay diyas and flowers.
• प्रशासन और पुलिस के यातायात व नाव संबंधी निर्देशों का पालन करें।Follow traffic and boating instructions from the local administration and police.
